Horticulture Field Day was held on May 26, 2016, on the campus of Virginia Tech, in Blacksburg. The event included four experienced speakers in the field of horticulture and gardening; tours of the six-acre Hahn Horticulture Garden and Stadium Woods, an 11-acre stand of rare, urban old-growth forest located within walking distance of the Hahn Garden; a sand-casted, leaf making demonstration; vendors and artists; and a fabulous garden tour to be offered the afternoon of the preceding day for those who arrived early. The Horticulture Committee hosted two speakers at the fall Symposium on September 26, 2017: Foxie Morgan and Beverly Lacey, who spoke on growing peonies and dahlias. Horticulture Chairman Catherine Madden reported that the horticulture division of the symposium had great participation with 500 stems entered representing 30 garden clubs. Kim Cory chaired the horticulture division.

Horticulture Field Day was held in Gloucester on May 31-June 1, 2017, co-chaired by Sandy Geiger and Betsy Carey. They reported a huge success with 200 attendees.  Headquarters at Brent & Becky’s Bulbs was a great location, and staggering visits to the gardens worked well.

The horticulture exhibit at the 2017 Board of Governors meeting in Lexington featured native or introduced plants that would grow along a trail in each club’s area. The exhibits were displayed by region and resulted in an impressive “landscape” setting.

2017 Horticulture Award of Merit recipients were Susan Upshur Brown, The Garden Club of the Eastern Shore; DeLane W. Porter, Dolley Madison Garden Club; Kay Spindle Shiflett, The Virginia Beach Garden Club; and Virginia Trinkle Vinyard, Mill Mountain Garden Club.

2018 Horticulture Award of Merit recipients were Cathy Leitch, Roanoke Valley Garden Club; Kaye Moomaw, Hillside Garden Club; Marilyn Millard, Rivanna Garden Club; Meredith Mercer, The Charlottesville Garden Club; and Karen Jamison, The Williamsburg Garden Club.

“The Garden Club of Virginia exists to celebrate the beauty of the land, to conserve the gifts of nature and to challenge future generations to build on this heritage.”

These worthy goals have guided the Garden Club of Virginia since 1920.
